Outdoor Living & Nature Awareness

"I would like to invite you to learn ways that will support you to live a little wilder"

I am Jay and I live a wilder life.

Connecting with nature is an essential ingredient for well being, even more so in the modern context.  12 years ago I set an intention to incorporate more outdoor living, nature awareness and nature immersion activities into my life.  As a result I now find it easier to disconnect from my smart phone and I am now happier and healthier, living my life in tune with the flow of the seasons and the day.  I make time to chill around the campfire sometimes baking bread for supper or woodcarving.  I grow, gather & use my own edible wild plants and firewood.  I enjoy the challenge of tracking down local wildlife so I can photograph it or learn about it's habits and where it lives.  What's more is I have inadvertently become more self sufficient be it when I go for a walk or paddle my canoe both near to or far from home.   I call this journey to reconnect with nature 're-wilding' and I would like to pass on what I have learned to you.

"Are you curious about?"

What living a little wilder in a modern world looks like?

How getting closer to wildlife can help you to become more focused at work?

How baking bread on a campfire can teach you about trees?

Where buzzard's hang out when they are not soaring in the sky?

Which plants can be added to an omelette, used as soap or make good string?

How to put up a simple shelter if there is a sudden downpour?

W
hat the birds are talking about & how they help you to live more in the moment?

How to light & tend fires in any season & in all weathers?

Ways to disconnect a child from the virtual world & get them outside?

What's next?

I would hope you will be inspired to continue your re-wilding journey and to develop the skills you learned and to explore ways to incorporate them into your daily life.  With hindsight, I wished I had reached out to like-minded folk for support when I started my journey.  We all need someone to share stories with and to motivate us.  For this reason I would like to reach out & invite you to become a member of the re-wilding 'facebook' group:

‘OUR WILDER LIFE'

This virtual group is open to you if you have participated in at least one of the woodland experiences.  Here, you will have the opportunity to share ideas of how you incorporated the practices & skills learned into your life.  It is also a place to share your stories or photos about your nature encounters or wilder living experiences/projects. For example, it might be sharing how wonderful it was watching a hover fly flirt in summer next to your back garden step;  how you knew the sparrow hawk was about as you sat on your balcony; progress on your garden log pile or photos of your moose tracking adventure in the wilds of Canada.

If you are inspired to take your re-wilding journey beyond you, I am building two courses that might be of interest :

RED FOX MENTORING

You are here in this moment reading this because of 'someone' took some time to focus the attention of your ancestors. These 'someones' were mentors, role models who cared and who paid attention to nature. Mentors encouraged your ancestors to look to nature as a teacher and also passed on the survival skills of self sufficiency so they did not get lost, stayed hydrated, got lunch & avoided being lunch!  'Someone' cared enough about you to plant the tree you climbed as a child.

Who are the 'someones' in your life passing on this ancient wisdom? I am one of the few 'someones' who is continuing this ancient game of pass the parcel and together we can start the next round!

Red fox mentoring is a course that aims to develop your mentoring skills so you can support any adults or children in your life to re-wild.  Get in touch if you would like to hear more about this course whether you are an individual adult, a couple, a group, a parent or carer, part of an extended family, a volunteer for an organisation such as guiding, scouting, a forest school leader or you have a role in education or youth work.
